COMLEX USA Review

COMLEX USA Examination stands and refers to Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination is a sequence of three osteopathic medical licensing examinations (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3) osteopathic physicians conducted by the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME). COMLEX Exam is similar to USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) and regarded as common path by the Osteopathic Physicians (D.O.s) who apply for medical licensure in 50 states of USA.

Passing Scores Range and Means

COMLEX-USA Level 1 - 200 - 871 (Mean of 500)

COMLEX-USA Level 2 CE (Cognitive Evaluation) - 200-871 (Mean of 400)

COMLEX-USA Level 2 PE (Performance Evaluation) – Pass or Fail

COMLEX-USA Level 3 - 200 - 871 (Mean of 350)

COMLEX-USA Level 1 is taken after completion of the second year of medical school. Candidates are tested with the basics in health and disease process. COMLEX Level 1 covers the basic medical sciences, like anatomy, behavioral science, biochemistry, microbiology, osteopathic principles, pathology, pharmacology and physiology.

It is a 2 Hour + 4 Hour Exams in one day (40-minute break)

COMLEX-USA Level 2 is taken during the third or fourth year of medical school. It consists of two parts: Level 2-Cognitive Evaluation (CE) and Level 2-Performance Evaluation (PE). Candidates are required to exhibit knowledge of clinical concepts and medical decision making.  COMLEX Level 2 (CE) covers the clinical disciplines like, emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, osteopathic principles, pediatrics, psychiatry and surgery.

COMLEX Level 2 Performance Evaluation (PE) is a clinical skills examination in which candidates are required to demonstrate and tested with clinical skills with patients. Candidates must complete 12 patient encounters each with 14 minutes duration.

Unlike other COMLEX Exams, PE (Performance Evaluation) is graded either pass or fail. It is 7 Hours clinical skills examination.

COMLEX-USA Level 3 is taken after starting a residency program and covers the clinical disciplines of medicine, like emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, osteopathic principles, pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery.
